The Caledonia No. 9 Grange Hall is a special old building in East Hardwick, Vermont. It's located at 88 Church Street. This building was finished in 1909. It was built for a group called the Grange. This particular Grange chapter is the oldest one in New England that still uses its original rules! It started way back in 1872. The building itself is a great example of an old style called Queen Anne architecture. Because it's so important, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2017.

What is the Caledonia No. 9 Grange Hall?

The Caledonia No. 9 Grange Hall is found in the small village of East Hardwick. It sits on the east side of Church Street. The building is made of wood and has a pointed roof. From the street, it looks like it has one and a half floors.

Exploring the Building's Design

The building is on a steep hill above the Lamoille River. This means it has a full lower level too. The front of the building has a porch with a hip roof. This porch is supported by fancy turned posts. These posts have cool, carved wooden decorations. There are also turned railings on both sides of the steps. Similar decorations are found on the building's corners. There used to be another porch on the lower level. Its decorative parts are now safely stored away.

Why is the Grange Hall Important?

The East Hardwick Grange chapter started in 1873. This was just one year after the very first Grange chapter in New England began. That first one was in St. Johnsbury. At first, the East Hardwick Grange met in other places. They used a church and the village hall.

Building a Home for the Grange

Finally, in 1909, they built their own special building. A group of people helped plan this project. One important person on the building committee was Charles J. Bell. He used to be the Governor of Vermont. This building is quite unique in Vermont. Many Grange halls were not built just for the Grange. This one was, and it followed special plans from the national Grange group.
