Exploring the History of California Hollow

California Hollow has an interesting past. It was once part of an important travel route.

The Southern Route to California

During the exciting time of the California Gold Rush, many people wanted to go to California. They hoped to find gold and make their fortunes. One of the main paths they used was called the Southern Route. This route was part of the larger California Trail.

California Hollow was a section of this original Southern Route. Travelers would pass through this valley as they crossed the Black Mountains. Their journey took them between a place called Greenville, Utah and Muley Point. From there, they continued their long trip to California.

The Mormon Road and Its Changes

Later, this same path became known as the Mormon Road. This road was very important for early settlers and travelers.

However, in 1855, the Mormon Road was changed. The original route through California Hollow was no longer used as much. A new path was created a bit to the east. This new route was easier for wagons to travel on. It went from a crossing near Beaver, Utah to Muley Point.

The new path passed through areas like Nevershine Hollow and over Beaver Ridge. It then entered the canyon of Fremont Wash. Eventually, this new path rejoined the original road above Muley Point. This change made the journey smoother for those heading west.
