Scientific classification
Genus:
Polypodium (plant)
Species:
californicum

The California polypody (scientific name: Polypodium californicum) is a type of fern. It is found naturally in Baja California and California.

This fern often grows near the coast. You can also find it in damp places in coastal hills and mountains. It prefers the southern parts of its natural range.

What Does the California Polypody Look Like?

This fern belongs to the polypody family. It has a special underground stem called a rhizome. This rhizome is covered in scales and helps the fern anchor itself.

Leaves and Their Features

The California polypody grows leaves that can be quite large. They are usually oval or triangular in shape. These leaves can grow up to about 70 centimeters (28 inches) long. They can also be up to 20 centimeters (8 inches) wide.

Each large leaf is made up of many smaller parts. These parts are called segments. The segments are shaped like a spearhead, with a slightly dull point. They can feel thin, firm, or a bit soft and fleshy. The edges of these segments are usually slightly jagged, like a saw.

Spores and Reproduction

If you look at the underside of each leaf segment, you will see something interesting. There are two rows of small, flat, or slightly sunken bumps. These bumps are called sori (SOH-rye). Inside these sori are the fern's spores. Spores are like tiny seeds that help the fern reproduce.
