Aristida californica is a type of grass often called California threeawn or Mojave threeawn. It grows naturally in the Mojave Desert and Sonoran Desert areas. You can find it in northern Mexico, California, and Arizona.

What is California Threeawn?

California threeawn is a unique grass that grows in sandy places. It forms thick, bushy clumps that can be up to about 40 centimeters (about 16 inches) tall. This grass has a slightly hairy feel.

What Does It Look Like?

The plant's flower part, called an inflorescence, holds special seed structures. These are called spikelets. Each spikelet is quite hard and has a long, pointed tip that looks like a beak. It also has long, bristle-like parts called awns. These awns can be up to 4.5 centimeters (about 1.8 inches) long.
