Callery's History
Callery was first settled in 1880. A post office opened in the town in 1884. In 1892, a big fire destroyed most of the community. But because Callery was an important place for trains, many buildings were quickly rebuilt. The community officially became a borough in 1905.
Callery as a Railroad Center
Callery was located along the P&W Subdivision train line. It started as a small stop where trains would only stop if someone signaled them. But by the early 1900s, Callery grew into a busy railroad town. This happened when the Northern Subdivision train line was finished. This new line connected with the P&W line right in Callery.
This new connection made Callery a major hub for the B&O Railroad. For about 30 years, the town was known as Callery Junction. This meant it was a place where different train lines met.
However, by the 1930s, a new train connection was built at Eidenau. This new route was better because it avoided sharp turns and steep hills. After this, trains stopped using the old connection through Callery. So, Callery Junction was no longer a main train hub. Today, trains from the Buffalo and Pittsburgh Railroad still pass through Callery, but the big train junction is gone.
