Kivio is a free computer program used for making flowcharts and diagrams. It was part of a larger set of programs called KOffice, which included different tools for graphic art and office work, all made by KDE.

What can Kivio do?

Kivio has some cool features that help you create diagrams easily:

  • You can create special shapes, called stencils, using a programming language called Python. This means you can make custom shapes for your diagrams.
  • It can use stencils from another diagramming program called Dia. This makes it easy to use shapes you might already have.
  • It has a way to add new tools and functions through something called a plugin framework. This means developers could add more features to Kivio.

Kivio's Story

Kivio was first created by a company called theKompany. They decided to share the program's code with KOffice under a special license called GPL. This license means the software is free to use, share, and change.

Kivio's versions followed the KOffice version numbers. The last official stable version was 1.6.3, released on June 8, 2007. After that, Kivio continued to be worked on, but it didn't have a main person in charge, so no new stable versions were released for a while.

Kivio mp

There was a special version of Kivio called Kivio mp. The last update for Kivio mp was version 3.0, released in December 2004. This version was built using a technology called Qt 3.

Meet Calligra Flow

Calligra Flow is another free program for making diagrams. It is part of the Calligra Suite, which is like the next generation of the KOffice programs. Calligra Flow looks and feels a bit like Microsoft Visio, another popular diagramming program.

One cool thing about Calligra Flow is that you can create diagrams and then easily put them into other programs that are part of the Calligra Suite.

Calligra Flow's Story

In 2010, the people who developed KOffice decided to split into different groups. The code for Kivio was then brought into a new project called Calligra. A new person took charge of the program and renamed it Calligra Flow. When the KDE community announced the start of Calligra Suite on December 6, 2010, a flowchart program named 'Flow' was part of the exciting news.

Flow was included in the very first test release of Calligra Suite. A stable version of Flow was released along with the rest of Calligra Suite 2.4.

However, after Calligra 3.0, Flow was removed from the Calligra Suite. It was later replaced by another program called Karbon in Calligra 3.2.0.
