Calvert Island is a small island found in Whitefish Bay. This bay is part of the huge Lake of the Woods in Ontario, Canada. It's located in the Kenora District.

This island is mostly natural and wild. Only a small part of it has been developed.

Discovering Calvert Island

Calvert Island is a cool place to explore. It's known for its unique natural features.

Where is Calvert Island?

Calvert Island is about 13 kilometers (8 miles) south of a community called Sioux Narrows. It's also about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) west of Ontario Highway 71. This makes it a bit off the main road, adding to its quiet feel.

What Does the Island Look Like?

The island is about 930 meters (3,050 feet) long. It is also around 520 meters (1,700 feet) wide. That's roughly the length of nine football fields!

The western side of Calvert Island has smooth rocks. These rocks are tilted at a steep angle, about 45 to 55 degrees. They go straight down into the water, which looks pretty dramatic. Most of the island is undeveloped. However, there is a place called Whitefish Bay Camp on its southern tip.

Bays and Wildlife

Calvert Island has two bays. One is named Clipper Bay. The other bay does not have a name.

Clipper Bay is the bigger of the two. It's on the southeastern side of the island. The water in Clipper Bay is between 3 meters (10 feet) and 4.5 meters (15 feet) deep.

The unnamed bay is much shallower. It's a great spot for nature lovers. This shallow area is often a breeding ground for frogs. It's also where you might find young Northern Pike. Many of the cabins at Whitefish Bay Camp look out over this peaceful, shallow bay.

Nearby Islands

Right next to Calvert Island, to its east, is another island called Patsy Island. Patsy Island is not inhabited, meaning no one lives there. There are also many other small, unnamed islands all around Calvert Island.
