What Does the House Look Like?
The Calvin Coolidge House is in a quiet neighborhood in Northampton. It is a two-and-a-half story house made of wood. It has a sloped roof and a simple outside made of clapboard siding.
The house has a style called Colonial Revival. This means it looks like older American homes. It is actually a two-family house, called a duplex. Each side has a different porch. The side where Coolidge lived has a porch with a pointed roof and round columns. It also has a bay window that sticks out. Inside, the house has a fireplace with decorative columns.
Calvin Coolidge's Time Here
The house was built in 1900-1901 by J.W. O'Brian. Calvin Coolidge rented the left side of the house starting in 1905. The Coolidge family lived there until 1930.
This time was very important for Coolidge's career. While living in this house, he rose through many political roles. He started as a city council member. Then he became the Governor of Massachusetts. After that, he became Vice President. Finally, he became the President of the United States.
In 1930, Coolidge moved to a different house in Northampton. He said he moved because too many tourists were coming to this house. He wanted more privacy. This house is quite unique among homes where a U.S. president lived for a long time. This is because he did not own it, and it was a duplex (a two-family home).
