Calwa is a small community in Fresno County, California, United States. It used to be called Calwa City. It's a special kind of place called a "census-designated place" (CDP). This means it's a community that the government counts for population, but it's not officially a city or town with its own local government.
In 2020, about 1,776 people lived in Calwa. It is located about 4 miles (6.4 km) south of downtown Fresno. The name "Calwa" comes from "California Wine Association" (CalWA), which shows its connection to the wine industry.
Where is Calwa?
Calwa is a small area, covering about 0.6 square miles (1.5 square kilometers) of land. It's almost completely surrounded by the city of Fresno. Imagine a small island of land that belongs to the county, but is mostly inside a big city! This is called a "county island."
Calwa's History
Calwa has an interesting past. In 1885, a man named Hugh William La Rue started a farm there. He planted an orchard and a vineyard. Sadly, his first crop was ruined by grasshoppers.
Later, Calwa became a important railroad town. The Santa Fe Railways spent a lot of money to build a large train yard and homes for their workers. The Southern Pacific Railroad also had tracks passing through Calwa.
The first post office in the area opened in 1913. It was called "Calwa City" back then. In 1949, the name was officially shortened to "Calwa."
