Calycadenia micrantha is a rare flowering plant. It belongs to the daisy family. People often call it the small-flowered calycadenia.

This plant grows only in California. It is found in about 13 different spots. These spots are spread out across several counties. Some of these counties are Napa, Siskiyou, and Lake.

Discovering the Small-Flowered Calycadenia

Scientists officially named Calycadenia micrantha as a new species in 2004. Before this, some of these plants were thought to be a different kind of plant. They were mixed up with its close relative, Calycadenia truncata.

Because it was found in many different places, scientists think it might grow in other areas too. They believe it just hasn't been reported yet.

What Does the Plant Look Like?

This plant is an annual plant. This means it lives for only one growing season. It grows a thin, purplish stem. The stem can be 10 to 50 centimeters (about 4 to 20 inches) tall.

Its leaves are hairy. They are usually 2 to 5 centimeters (about 1 to 2 inches) long.

Flowers and Reproduction

The plant has small flower heads. These look like single flowers but are actually many tiny flowers grouped together. Each head has 1 to 6 yellow petals. These petals are called ray florets. They have three small lobes at their tips.

Unlike many other Calycadenia plants, this one can fertilize itself. This is called being self-compatible. It means it does not need pollen from another plant to make seeds.
