Life and Traditions in Cambados

Fishing is a very important job in this part of Galicia, which is called Rias Baixas. In Cambados, people sell fresh fish and seafood at a busy place called La Plaza. It's a big market that's full of life every morning, except Sundays. Fish is a common part of daily meals here.

Seafood from the Sea

The water around Cambados is called La Ría de Arousa. It's full of many kinds of seafood. People collect seafood in areas like "O Serrido" or "A Seca." These spots are near the San Tome Tower. When the tide goes out, these areas become almost dry. This makes it easy for seafood collectors to find clams and cockles. Many people, mostly women, go there with buckets and tools to dig in the sand. Seafood is a huge part of life in Cambados and other coastal villages in Galicia. It's always eaten during special times like Christmas, holidays, and especially at weddings.

Local Markets and Fiestas

Every Saturday and Wednesday morning, there's a lively market along the waterfront. You can find clothes, shoes, perfumes, and things for your home. It's popular because the prices are often good. Sellers call out prices to get people to buy their items.

Many holidays in Cambados mean "fiestas," which are big parties. These usually happen in the summer. They have fun rides and performances. The most famous fiesta is the Festa do Albariño. It takes place in the week before the first Sunday of August. During this festival, tents are set up where you can try high-quality Albariño wine and seafood. Many people walk around with a wine glass hanging from their neck! The performances at the Albariño fiesta are often by famous artists, not just local bands. For example, a famous singer named Alejandro Sanz has performed there.

All About Albariño Wine

Cambados is very well-known for its special white wine, Albariño. The weather here is often wet, cool, and windy. This kind of weather helps the grapes grow thick and gives the wine a strong, lovely smell. In the last ten years, Albariño has become famous all over the world. It's now grown outside of Galicia too. People sometimes call this wine "the wine of the sea." This is because the vineyards are near the coast. Also, its slightly sour taste makes it perfect to drink with seafood.
