Scientific classification

The acocil (scientific name: Cambarellus montezumae) is a type of crayfish. It belongs to the family Cambaridae. This small creature is found only in Mexico. You can find it in areas like Jalisco and Puebla.

What is an Acocil?

The word acocil comes from the Nahuatl language. This was the language spoken by the Pre-Columbian people of Mexico. The word cuitzilli means "crooked one of the water" or "squirms in the water."

A Traditional Mexican Food

For a very long time, acociles have been a traditional food in Mexico. Ancient Mexicans would boil or bake these small animals. They often ate them in tacos. Even today, acociles are still a food source for local people.

Where Acociles Live

Acociles are quite common in the parts of Mexico where they live. In some areas, there are many of them! They can live in different kinds of water habitats. This includes natural places and even man-made areas like canals.

Their Favorite Spots

You will often find acociles in places with lots of water plants. They like to hide among the roots of these plants. Acociles are tough little creatures. They can handle many different water conditions. This includes a wide range of temperatures, water acidity (pH), and how much oxygen is in the water.

How Acociles Are Protected

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) studies animals and plants. They consider the acocil a "least-concern species." This means they are not worried about it becoming endangered.

Why They Are Safe

Acociles are adaptable, meaning they can adjust to different environments. Their numbers in the wild are stable. This means there are plenty of them around. They do not face many big threats. One small threat is the introduction of common carp fish into their areas. These carp might compete with acociles for food or space.
