The word acocil comes from the Nahuatl language. This was the language spoken by the Pre-Columbian people of Mexico. The word cuitzilli means "crooked one of the water" or "squirms in the water."

One small threat is the introduction of common carp fish into their areas. These carp might compete with acociles for food or space.
