History of Cambridge

Cambridge exists because of the railroad. In 1880, the Kansas City, Lawrence & Southern Railroad was built. A new town site was created about a mile south of an older settlement called Lazette.

How Cambridge Was Founded

Benjamin H. Clover helped plan the new town on May 3, 1880. He named it Cambridge after Cambridge University in England. The first post office opened in Cambridge on January 30, 1880. This meant people could send and receive mail.

Railroad Connections

Later in 1880, the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railway bought most of the stock of the Kansas City, Lawrence & Southern Railroad. They operated it as the Southern Kansas Railroad. Cambridge became an important stop for shipping goods and passengers.

Cold War Alert System

During the Cold War, Cambridge was considered for a special radio tower. This tower would be part of a system called the Decision Information Distribution System. Its job was to alert people if there was an enemy attack. These "control stations" would send signals to other stations across the country. These stations would then play recorded messages to the public.
