Camden was first created in 1818. It was originally called Dover. However, there was already another town named Dover, Ohio. So, in 1824, the village's name was changed to Newcomb. This new name honored George Newcomb, who was a State Senator.

But the name Newcomb didn't really stick. People weren't using it much. So, in 1835, the village was renamed again. This time, it was called Camden, after a town in South Carolina called Camden, South Carolina. This name has stayed ever since!
