Cameron Burrell (born September 11, 1994 – died August 9, 2021) was an American track and field athlete. He was a very fast sprinter. In 2018, he became the NCAA Division I champion in the 100 meters race.
Cameron also helped his college team, the Houston Cougars, win the 4 × 100 meters relay in both 2017 and 2018. He ran for the United States in big international races. He won a gold medal at the World Junior Championships in 2012. He also earned a silver medal at the World Relays in 2019. In 2018, Cameron helped the U.S. 4 × 100 m relay team win gold at the first-ever Athletics World Cup.
Cameron came from a family of amazing athletes. His father, Leroy Burrell, was an Olympic gold medalist and once held the world record for the 100 meters. His mother, Michelle Finn-Burrell, also won an Olympic gold medal. Track and field legend Carl Lewis was his godfather. In 2017, Cameron ran the 100 meters in 9.93 seconds. This was faster than his father's old school record and made him one of only 121 men to run under 10 seconds. He did this again in 2018.
Early Life and Family
Cameron Burrell was born on September 11, 1994. His parents were famous track and field stars, Leroy Burrell and Michelle Finn-Burrell. He had two siblings, Joshua and Jaden. Growing up, Cameron was always around sports. His aunt, Dawn Burrell, was also a world champion in the long jump. Carl Lewis, a close friend of his father, knew Cameron his whole life.
Even though his family was full of athletes, they never forced Cameron to join track and field. But Cameron knew from a young age that he wanted to be a sprinter. He went to Ridge Point High School in Missouri City, Texas. During his high school years, he competed in major junior championships around the world. He also became good friends with his rival, Elijah Hall. After high school, Cameron decided to go to the University of Houston. His father was a coach there, so it was a natural choice.
College Track Star
Cameron Burrell had a very successful college career at the University of Houston. He started strong in his first year, reaching the finals of the 60m race indoors.
In 2016, Cameron came back even stronger after an injury. He set a new school record in the 60m race with a time of 6.48 seconds. He also won his first conference title in the 100m race.
The year 2017 was a big one for Cameron. He broke his father's long-standing school record in the 100m, running it in an amazing 9.93 seconds. He also helped the Houston team win the 4x100m relay at the NCAA Championships.
In 2018, Cameron and his team, the Houston Cougars, set a new college record in the 4x100m relay. They won this title for the second year in a row. Then, Cameron finally won his first individual NCAA title in the 100m race. His teammates, Elijah Hall and Mario Burke, also did well in that race. Cameron dedicated his win to another teammate, Brian Barraza.
After their successful college careers, Cameron Burrell and Elijah Hall became professional athletes. They signed with big sports companies like Nike and Red Bull.
