After the Jacobite side lost the Battle of Culloden, Donald Cameron of Erracht had to hide in the mountains for three years. He had three children. His oldest child grew up to be Sir Alan Cameron of Erracht.

The special Cameron of Erracht tartan was created by Mrs. Cameron of Erracht. A tartan is a patterned cloth that represents a Scottish clan. It is believed that she based her design on an old pattern from the Lochaber area. This old pattern itself was actually based on patterns from the Clan Donald, who were powerful leaders in the past.
