Camille Martin (born in 1956) is a Canadian poet and collage artist. She lived in New Orleans for fourteen years. In 2005, she moved to Toronto after Hurricane Katrina.

About Camille Martin

Early Life and Learning

Camille Martin was born in El Dorado, Arkansas, in 1956. She spent most of her childhood in Lafayette, Louisiana. She loved learning!

In 1980, she earned a special degree in Piano Performance and Literature from the Eastman School of Music. This means she was very good at playing the piano.

Later, in 1996, she earned another degree in Poetry from the University of New Orleans. Her collection of poems for this degree was called at peril. It was very well-received.

In 2003, she earned her highest degree, a PhD in English, from Louisiana State University. Her big research paper for this degree won a special award.

Camille has also received money and support for her poetry from many groups. These include the Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council.

Her Work and Career

Camille Martin is a talented writer. She has written five full-length poetry books. Some of these are Blueshift Road (2021) and Looms (2012).

She has also published four smaller poetry books, called chapbooks. These include If Leaf, Then Arpeggio and Plastic Heaven. Her poems have been published in many magazines and journals. You can find her work in the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Her poems have even been translated into Spanish and German!

Camille also worked on two other books. She helped to edit and translate them with John P. Clark. These books are about a thinker named Elisée Reclus.

From 2006 to 2010, Camille taught literature and writing at Ryerson University (now Toronto Metropolitan University). While there, she helped edit a literary magazine called White Wall. She also helped organize poetry readings and hosted a radio show about books and writing.

Today, Camille often writes essays about poetry and visual arts on her blog, Rogue Embryo. She also has a website, CamilleMartin.ca, where you can learn more about her poetry and collage art.
