Camille Polfer (born 21 November 1924 – died 19 March 1983) was an important person from Luxembourg. He was known as both a politician and a teacher.

Early Life and Education

Camille Polfer was born in Namur, a city in southern Belgium. His parents were from Luxembourg. He started his schooling in France. Later, he went to high school in Echternach, which is in Luxembourg.

After finishing high school, he went to the University of Nancy. There, he studied to become a sports teacher. He loved sports and wanted to help young people stay active.

A Career in Teaching

Camille Polfer began his teaching career in 1950. He taught at the Lycée de Garçons Esch-sur-Alzette until 1959. This was a boys' high school.

Later, he moved to another school, the Lycée de Garçons Luxembourg. This school was in Limpertsberg. He taught there until 1969. After that, he became a sports commissioner. This meant he helped organize sports for the whole country.

Entering Politics

In 1969, Camille Polfer started his political journey. He joined the Democratic Party. He was elected to the communal council of Luxembourg City. A communal council is like a local city government. Its members make decisions for the city.

Becoming an Échevin

After serving on the council, he became an échevin. An échevin is like a deputy mayor. They help the mayor run the city. This was an important step in his political career.

Mayor of Luxembourg City

In 1980, Camille Polfer became the Mayor of Luxembourg City. This is a very important job. The mayor is the main leader of the city. They help make big decisions for everyone living there.

However, Camille Polfer's health started to decline. Because of this, he had to step down from his role as mayor. He served for two years.

A Family Legacy in Politics

After Camille Polfer left office, his daughter, Lydie, took over as mayor. She continued to lead Luxembourg City until 1999. Lydie Polfer also became a very important politician in Luxembourg. She served as Deputy Prime Minister. She was also the Minister for Foreign Affairs from 1999 to 2004.

Later Life and Legacy

Camille Polfer passed away in 1983. He was 58 years old. This was just one year after he stepped down as mayor.

His memory lives on in Luxembourg. A sports stadium is named after him: Stade Camille Polfer in South Bonnevoie. There is also a street called rue Camille Polfer in Cents. These places help people remember his contributions to the city.
