Camp Verde is a small, unincorporated community in Kerr County, Texas. It is located in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. This historic spot is about halfway between the towns of Bandera and Kerrville. You can find it along State Highway 173.

A Look Back: Camp Verde's Story

Camp Verde started as a military camp long ago. Soldiers were stationed there to help protect the area. The community grew around a store that opened in 1857. This store, first owned by Mr. Williams, served the soldiers.

After Mr. Williams passed away, a German immigrant named Charles Schreiner took over the store. Even after the military camp closed, the store kept going. It even became a post office for the people living nearby.

Mail Call: The Post Office

The first post office in Camp Verde opened in 1858. It was run right out of Schreiner's store. This first post office closed in 1866.

Later, in 1887, the post office reopened with Charles C. Kelly as the postmaster. However, it closed again in 1892. Finally, Walter S. Nowlin brought the post office and store back to life in 1899.

The Great Camel Experiment

Did you know the U.S. Army once tried using camels in Texas? In 1854, Jefferson Davis, who was the Secretary of War at the time, thought camels would be great for army travel. He later became the president of the Confederacy.

The idea was approved by Congress in 1855. The first camels arrived in Texas in April 1856. They were brought to the military camp near Camp Verde. The experiment ended when the fort closed in 1869.

Camp Verde General Store Today

The Camp Verde General Store is still open for business! It has been operating for over 150 years. This historic store has become a popular spot for tourists.

Besides selling goods, the store also runs the local post office. You can even grab a meal at its restaurant. It's a true piece of Texas history still in action.

Camp Verde's Climate
