Campamento is a small village located on the coast in southern Spain. It is part of the larger area called San Roque in the Province of Cádiz, which is in the region of Andalusia.
Campamento is about four kilometers south of the main town of San Roque. It sits right on the Bay of Algeciras. This means it is very close to Gibraltar and is like a suburb of La Línea de la Concepción. In 2011, about 1,836 people lived there.
Getting Around Campamento
Campamento is easy to reach by road. The main highway, called Autovía CA-34, runs right through it. Another road, the CA-2321, connects Campamento to a place called Guadarranque.
If you don't have a car, that's okay! There is a regular bus service. This bus connects Campamento with the towns of San Roque and La Línea de la Concepción.
History of Campamento
The name "Campamento" means "camp" in Spanish. This village got its name because Spanish soldiers set up a military camp here a long time ago. This happened during a big event called the Great Siege of Gibraltar. During this siege, which was a long battle, soldiers camped in this area.
Later, in the 1600s, some large country estates were built here. These estates were called cortijos. Two famous ones were named Benalife and Buena Vista.
