History of Campbellsburg

The city of Campbellsburg was officially started by the state government in 1840. It was first named "Chiltonsville" after a local person named Charles J. Chilton. However, the name was changed very quickly, within three weeks, to "Campbellsburg." This new name honored another local family in the area.

Later in the same year, the local post office, which was in a place called Benevola, also changed its name to "Campbellsburg."

When the Louisville, Cincinnati and Lexington Railroad arrived in 1869, it caused the town to split into two parts: "Old Campbellsburg" and "New Campbellsburg." New Campbellsburg became its own separate town in 1876. Over time, New Campbellsburg grew bigger and bigger. Eventually, the two parts of the town joined together to form the single city we know today.

In 1974, on April 1st, a strong tornado hit Campbellsburg. Much of the main business area was destroyed. After the tornado, the community worked hard to rebuild the central part of the city.
