The Campo de Cartagena is a special natural region in the Region of Murcia, Spain. It is also known as the Comarca de Cartagena. This area is a flat plain in southeastern Spain. It stretches from the Sierra de Carrascoy mountains to the Mediterranean Sea.
Its main city is Cartagena. This city has a very important Naval Base for the Spanish Navy. The Campo de Cartagena is home to about 398,000 people (as of 2020). It covers an area of 1,481.8 square kilometers. It is a big center for tourism, culture, and industry.
This region also has many beautiful natural areas. More than 18,500 hectares are protected. These include places like the Calblanque, Monte de las Cenizas y Peña del Águila Natural Park. Other protected spots are the Sierra de la Muela, Cabo Tiñoso and Roldán Natural Park. The Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar are also protected. Many islands and islets along the Mediterranean coast are part of this protected zone. The Mar Menor lagoon is a very important natural feature here. There are also marine reserves like Cabo de Palos e Islas Hormigas.

History of the Region
The Campo de Cartagena has a very long and interesting history. You can find many old buildings, museums, and archaeological sites here. The city of Cartagena itself is full of historical treasures. Its port has been important for over 3,000 years. You can also visit the ancient Roman theatre in Cartagena.
In 1873, there was a historical event called the Cantonal Revolution. People in Cartagena tried to create their own independent area. This movement spread to other regions. For several months, Cartagena was under attack by troops trying to bring order back.

Mar Menor Lagoon
