Camptown is a small community in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, in the United States. It is called a "census-designated place" because the government counts its population separately for official records. This helps them understand how many people live in different areas.
As of the 2010 census, about 766 people lived in Camptown. A large paper factory, once called Union Camp and later International Paper, used to be located here. This factory is now closed. Camptown is also known for being a historic African American community.
Where is Camptown Located?
Camptown is found in the eastern part of Virginia. It sits right next to the city of Franklin.
Rivers and Borders
To the west of Camptown is the Blackwater River. This river forms a natural border between Isle of Wight County and the city of Franklin. The southeastern edge of Camptown touches the city of Suffolk.
Roads and Travel
Several important roads run through Camptown. U.S. Route 58 Business and U.S. Route 258 Business share the same path through the community, known as Carrsville Highway. The main U.S. Route 258 Bypass goes through the eastern side of Camptown, called Camp Family Highway.
- The town of Windsor is about 14 miles (23 km) northeast of Camptown via US-258.
- Carrsville is about 5 miles (8 km) to the east using US-58 Business.
- The center of Suffolk is about 20 miles (32 km) to the east.
Size of Camptown
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the total area of Camptown is about 16.4 square kilometers (6.3 square miles). Most of this area, about 15.7 square kilometers (6.1 square miles), is land. The remaining 0.7 square kilometers (0.3 square miles), which is about 4% of the total area, is water.
