Windsor is a small town located in Isle of Wight County, in the southeastern part of Virginia, United States. It is part of the Hampton Roads area. The town is situated where two important roads, U.S. Route 460 and U.S. Route 258, meet. In 2010, about 2,626 people lived in Windsor.

History of Windsor, Virginia

Windsor began as a community near the Norfolk Southern Corporation's railroad tracks. The town officially became a chartered town on March 15, 1902. Over the years, Windsor grew and added important services for its residents.

Town Services and Growth

In 1947, Windsor started its own volunteer fire department. This group of volunteers helps keep the town safe from fires. Later, in 1990, the town created its own police department. This department helps maintain law and order in Windsor.

A big change happened in 2001 when Windsor expanded its borders. The town took in about 2.8 square miles (7.3 square kilometers) of land from Isle of Wight County. This expansion almost tripled the number of people living in Windsor.

Historic Buildings in Windsor

Two buildings in Windsor are very old and important. They are the Henry Saunders House and the William Scott Farmstead. These places are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are recognized for their historical value and are protected.

Community and Policing in Windsor

In 2021, Windsor received attention because of how its police department handled traffic stops. A small part of the town's money came from fines given to drivers. The state's Attorney General of Virginia looked into the town's policing practices.

In 2023, Windsor reached an agreement with the state. The agreement included plans for independent reviews of complaints against the police. It also required more training for police officers. The town also promised to keep working towards professional standards for its law enforcement.

Roads and Connections

U.S. Route 460 runs through the middle of Windsor. This road goes southeast about 11 miles (18 km) to Suffolk. It also goes northwest about 47 miles (76 km) to Petersburg. If you travel east from Windsor on US-460 and U.S. Route 58, you can reach Norfolk in about 29 miles (47 km).

Another important road, U.S. Route 258, crosses US-460 on the western side of Windsor. This road goes north about 15 miles (24 km) to Smithfield. It also goes southwest the same distance to Franklin.

Georgie D. Tyler Middle School

Georgie D. Tyler Middle School serves students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. The school's mascot is the Titan, and their colors are blue and silver. This school opened in late summer of 2014. Before that, it was known as Windsor Middle School. In the 2010-2011 school year, Windsor Middle School had 328 students.

Windsor High School

Windsor High School is for older students, from 9th to 12th grade. Their school colors are royal blue and gold, and their mascot is the Dukes. In the 2010-2011 school year, 501 students were enrolled.

The high school offers many activities and sports. Students can join teams for baseball, basketball, cheerleading, football, golf, soccer, softball, track, tennis, wrestling, and volleyball. They also have clubs for theatre, forensics (public speaking and debate), and academic bowl competitions.
