Campwin Beach is a small coastal town in Queensland, Australia. It's part of the Mackay Region. In 2016 census, about 517 people lived there. It's a great place to visit the beach!

Exploring Campwin Beach's Location

This town has a unique J-shape. It is bordered by the Coral Sea to the east. To the north-west, you'll find the Castrades Inlet (21°22′34″S 149°18′36″E / 21.37611°S 149.3100°E / -21.37611; 149.3100 (Castrades Inlet)). An unnamed creek forms a loose border to the west.

Beaches and Reefs

In the north-east, there's a headland with Coral Point (21°22′09″S 149°19′05″E / 21.3692°S 149.3181°E / -21.3692; 149.3181 (Coral Point)) as its northern tip. This area has a rocky coastline. Just off the north-east coast, you can find Coral Point Reef (21°22′20″S 149°19′10″E / 21.3721°S 149.3194°E / -21.3721; 149.3194 (Coral Point Reef)).

South of the rocky headland is Campwin Beach (21°22′30″S 149°18′59″E / 21.3749°S 149.3165°E / -21.3749; 149.3165 (Campwin Beach)). This sandy beach is open to everyone. You can get there easily from Campwin Esplanade.

Town Layout

The north-east part of Campwin Beach is where most of the houses are. The southern part is home to the Campwin Beach Prawn Farm (21°22′57″S 149°18′17″E / 21.3825°S 149.3048°E / -21.3825; 149.3048 (Campwin Beach Prawn Farm)). Many areas along the Castrades Inlet are marshland (21°22′38″S 149°18′09″E / 21.3772°S 149.3024°E / -21.3772; 149.3024 (Marshland)) and have not been developed.

A Look at Campwin Beach's History

The town's name comes from two early landowners: James Campbell and William Winter. The name is a mix of their last names. Campwin Beach was officially named on January 30, 2009. However, people were using the name much earlier, even as far back as 1930.

In 2016 census, the town had a population of 517 people.

What Campwin Beach Produces

Campwin Beach is known for its prawn farm. This farm typically produces between 70 to 100 tonnes (77 to 110 tons) of prawns each year. These prawns are cooked right there at the farm. After cooking, they are sold at the Sydney Fish Market.
