The Canberra Peace Park is a special place in Canberra, Australia's capital city. It sits right next to Lake Burley Griffin and the National Library of Australia. This park is a symbol of peace and a quiet spot for people to visit. It's important not to confuse it with the Canberra-Nara Peace Park, which is another park nearby.

What is the Canberra Peace Park?

The Peace Park was created in 1986. This year was special because the United Nations called it the "International Year of Peace." This meant countries around the world focused on promoting peace. The park was built to celebrate this idea and remind everyone about the importance of peace.

A Special Place for Peace

The park has a unique design with three main areas. In the middle, you'll find a square granite block called a plinth. On top of this plinth is a well-known peace symbol. Around it, there's another plinth with the word "Peace" written in many different languages. These include the official languages of the United Nations and the language of the local Ngunnawal people. The Ngunnawal are the traditional Aboriginal owners of the land where Canberra is built.

The central area is surrounded by a gentle water fountain. There's also a walkway made of cobbles (small, rounded stones) and pretty gardens with lavender flowers at each corner.

Unveiling the Monument

The main monument in the park was officially opened on 24 October 1990. Bill Hayden, who was the Governor-General of Australia at the time, unveiled it. The Governor-General is the King's representative in Australia. They have an important role in the country's government and ceremonies.

A Message for Everyone

The monument has a special message carved into it. It asks everyone who visits the park to think about peace. It encourages people to work towards a world where there are no dangerous weapons. This message reminds us all to hope for a peaceful future.
