Caney is a small town located in Atoka County, Oklahoma, in the United States. In 2020, about 185 people lived there. It's a quiet place with a rich history.
History of Caney
Caney got its start as a post office called Caney Switch in 1879. This first post office was only open for a short time. It was named after a nearby stream called Caney Creek. This creek had many "cane brakes," which are thick areas of tall, hollow plants similar to bamboo.
The post office reopened on June 20, 1888, about a mile south of its original spot. It was simply called Caney. Both the old and new locations were stops for the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad. This railroad was very important for travel and trade back then.
When Caney was first founded, it was part of the Choctaw Nation. This was a large area of land belonging to the Choctaw people, before Oklahoma became a state. Caney was specifically in Atoka County within the Choctaw Nation's Pushmataha District.
