Part of a Bigger River System

Cannon Lake is an important part of a larger water network. This network is called the Cannon River system. The Cannon River system begins at Shields Lake. It then flows through both Le Sueur and Rice counties. Eventually, all this water makes its way to the mighty Mississippi River. This means Cannon Lake's water eventually joins one of the largest rivers in North America!

What Lives in the Lake?

Scientists often check on the fish in lakes. They do this to understand the health of the lake. The last survey of Cannon Lake was in August 2009. During this survey, the most common type of fish found was the walleye.

Walleyes are a popular fish for anglers. The survey showed that there were many walleyes in Cannon Lake. On average, they caught about 7 walleyes in each fishing net used. These walleyes were a good size too. They weighed about 2.3 pounds each. Their average length was around 17.7 inches. This shows that Cannon Lake is a good home for walleye fish.
