History of Canute
Canute was started in the early 1900s. It was built along the Rock Island Railroad, which is no longer in use today. When cars became popular, Canute became a busy stop on U.S. Route 66. Many businesses opened to serve travelers. These included gas stations, motels, and restaurants.
However, things changed in May 1970. A new highway, Interstate 40, was built. It went around Canute, meaning most travelers no longer drove through the town. This caused many local businesses to close. Also, a nearby military base, Clinton-Sherman Air Force Base, closed around the same time. This also affected the town's economy.
Today, Canute still has some businesses. These include a bank and an auto repair shop on Route 66. There is also a gas station and convenience store. A former governor of Oklahoma, David Walters, was born in Canute.
