Canvas is a small place in Nicholas County, West Virginia, in the United States. It's called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Canvas is found along West Virginia Route 39, about 4 miles (6.4 km) east of a bigger town called Summersville. It even has its own post office with the ZIP code 26662.
How Canvas Got Its Name
From Earl to Canvas
Did you know Canvas wasn't always called Canvas? This community was first named Earl. But the people living there weren't very happy with that name.
Around the year 1910, a local store owner named Charles William “Bill” Bryant had a popular item for sale: canvas gloves! These gloves were a big hit with everyone in the community.
A Community Decision
Because the canvas gloves were so popular, the residents decided to hold a meeting. They voted to rename their community after the very successful product. That's how Earl became known as Canvas!
