Caonillas is a special area, like a neighborhood, located in the town of Aibonito, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 1,424 people called Caonillas home. It is one of the many unique areas that make up the beautiful island of Puerto Rico.
History of Caonillas
Puerto Rico used to be part of Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened under an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
Because of this, Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States. In 1899, the U.S. government counted all the people living in Puerto Rico. They found that Caonillas and a nearby area called Asomante had a combined population of 1,245 people.

Parts of Caonillas: Sectors
In Puerto Rico, areas like Caonillas are called barrios. These barrios are then divided into even smaller local places. These smaller parts are known as sectores (which means sectors in English).

Special Communities Program
Since 2001, Puerto Rico has had a special program. This program helps communities that face challenges. These challenges include having fewer resources or opportunities.
The program aims to improve the lives of people in these areas. It helps them get the support they need.
At first, 686 places were part of this program. By 2008, the list grew to 742 places. These places can be barrios, communities, or sectors. In 2004, the area known as Sector El Coquí in Caonillas was added to this important list.
Leaders of the program work to find new ways to help residents. They want to make sure everyone has a chance to succeed.
