The original Cap'n Crunch cereal was made to taste like a recipe of brown sugar and butter over rice. It was one of the first cereals to use a special oil coating to give it flavor. This needed a new way of baking!

Meet Cap'n Crunch: The Cereal's Mascot
Before the cereal even had its final taste, Quaker Oats had a plan for its marketing. The face of Cap'n Crunch cereal is a fun cartoon character named Cap'n Crunch. He looks like a naval captain from the late 1700s. He's an older gentleman with white eyebrows and a white mustache.
He wears a Revolutionary War-style naval uniform. This includes a special hat called a bicorne with a "C" on it. He also wears a blue coat with gold shoulder decorations called epaulettes and gold bars on his sleeves.
The Captain's Rank and Home
The The Wall Street Journal reported in 2013 that the mascot's full name is Horatio Magellan Crunch. He commands a ship called the Guppy. Cap'n Crunch was born on Crunch Island. This is a magical island near Ohio, located in the "Sea of Milk." Crunch Island has talking trees, silly creatures, and a mountain (Mt. Crunchmore) made of Cap'n Crunch cereal!
His bicorne hat looks like a "Napoleon-style" hat. This has made some people wonder if he might be French. A news source called CrunchFacts, which is all about the mascot, says that Horatio Crunch has a super high IQ of 200!
Fun Facts About the Captain
In 2013, some news sources like The Wall Street Journal pointed out something funny. A real naval captain in the U.S. Navy wears four stripes on their sleeves. But Cap'n Crunch's uniform only shows three stripes. This means his rank would actually be a Commander!
As a joke, The Wall Street Journal even reported that the U.S. Navy had no record of Crunch. They also joked that the NCIS was looking into him for pretending to be a naval officer!
Daws Butler was the first voice of Cap'n Crunch until 1988. Later, George J. Adams voiced him from 1991 to 2007. The commercials were first made by Jay Ward Productions. Later, Vinton Studios made a claymation ad in the 1980s.
Other Characters from Cap'n Crunch
