Cape St. Claire is a friendly community located in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, United States. It's a bit like a suburb of Annapolis, which is a larger city nearby. While Cape St. Claire is the main part, this area also includes smaller neighborhoods like Atlantis and Walnut Ridge.
This community is a great place with lots to do! You'll find three marinas, which are places where boats are kept, along with many parks and beaches. There's also a shopping center, and several schools, including Broadneck High School and Cape St. Claire Elementary School. The Cape St. Claire Volunteer Fire Company helps keep everyone safe. Many churches are also part of the community, like Broadneck Baptist Church and Saint Andrew By the Bay Roman Catholic Church.

Exploring Cape St. Claire's Location
Cape St. Claire is located at 39°2′34″N 76°26′44″W / 39.04278°N 76.44556°W. It's surrounded by water on three sides: the Little Magothy River to the east, the Magothy River to the north, and Deep Creek to the west. To the south, you'll find College Parkway.
A major road, U.S. Route 50, runs just south of the community. This highway makes it easy to travel about 7 miles (11 km) west to Annapolis or about 3 miles (5 km) east to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, which crosses the huge Chesapeake Bay. The total area of Cape St. Claire is about 2.5 square miles (6.5 square kilometers). A good part of this area, about 0.5 square miles (1.4 square kilometers), is water!

The community is made up of many different families and individuals. In 2000, about 28.6% of the population was under 18 years old, meaning there are lots of kids and teens in the area. The average age of residents was 36 years old.
A Look Back: History of Cape St. Claire
From Farmland to Community
Before the 1940s, the land where Cape St. Claire now stands was mostly farmland. Some of these farms date back to the late 1700s! You can still see two old houses from that time: the "Stinchcomb House" and Goshen Farm.
In the early 1900s, a famous doctor named Hugh H. Young from Johns Hopkins University started buying up this farmland. He had a dream of building a new community. His first attempt, called Persimmon Point, didn't quite work out because of the Great Depression.
Building a New Place to Live
After Dr. Young passed away, his children formed a company called the River Bay Company. They continued his dream and officially planned out the community of Cape St. Claire on June 14, 1949. The idea was to create a nice summer getaway for people living in Washington, D.C. and Baltimore.
To help manage the new community, the River Bay Company created the Cape St. Claire Club. This club, later renamed the Cape St. Claire Improvement Association, held its first meeting on June 30, 1949. It was set up to help run things in the growing community.
Community Improvements and Benefits
In 1989, something important happened: the Anne Arundel County Council approved the creation of the Cape St. Claire Special Community Benefits District. This special district allows the community to collect a small tax from property owners. This money is then used by the Improvement Association to make the community even better.
Thanks to this special district, Cape St. Claire has been able to buy more shared land, build a special pier for fishing and crabbing, improve community facilities, and even hire off-duty county police for extra safety. It's a great example of how a community can work together to improve their neighborhood!
