What is the Capitol Center?
The Capitol Center is a modern, 26-story skyscraper. It was built to hold many different offices and businesses. The outside of the building is made of special tinted glass and shiny metal panels. It looks very sleek and modern!
A Tall History
The Capitol Center was finished in December 1987. For many years, it was the tallest structure in South Carolina. It held this record until 2009, when the Prysmian Copper Wire Tower was completed in Abbeville.
Before the Capitol Center was built, an old hotel called the Wade Hampton Hotel stood in its place. That hotel was taken down in July 1985 to make room for this new, tall building.
Names Over Time
When the Capitol Center was first built, it was known as the AT&T Building. Over the years, its name changed a few times. It was also called the Affinity Building and the SouthTrust Tower. Today, the name you see on the building is for BB&T Bank.
Inside the Building
The Capitol Center has a huge amount of office space, about 460,020 sq ft (42,737 m2) (that's like 8 football fields!). Most of this space is rented out. Many different groups use the offices, including:
- Some state government offices
- Several important law firms in South Carolina
- Other businesses
Right next to the main tower, there's a large 7-story parking garage. It has space for over 1,000 cars, making it easy for people who work or visit there to park.
On the 25th floor, you'll find The Capital City Club. This is a special club where people can meet, eat, and enjoy amazing views of the city from high up!
