The Capt. John P. Nichols House is a very old and special home located in Searsport, Maine. It was built in 1865 for a successful ship captain. This house is a great example of a building style called Italianate architecture. It has a fancy tower on its roof called a cupola.
In 1983, this house was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important building worth protecting. Today, you can visit it because it's known as the Homeport Inn.

What Does the Nichols House Look Like?
The Nichols House is in Searsport, near other beautiful old homes. It's part of a group of historic buildings. The house is made of wood and shaped like a big cube. It has a special roof that slopes down on all sides. This roof has fancy decorations with small blocks and brackets.
The Amazing Cupola
On top of the roof, there's a detailed square tower called a cupola. It has columns at its corners. Each side of the cupola has round-shaped windows. The top of the cupola also has decorations like the main roof.
Front of the House
The front of the house has three main sections. The front door has a porch added in the early 1900s. The windows on the first floor have decorative tops. On the second floor, the middle section has two round-shaped windows. The windows on the sides have a slightly curved top.
Who Lived in the Nichols House?
This house was built in 1865 for Captain John P. Nichols. He was one of the most successful ship captains from Searsport during his time. The Nichols family was very important in the shipping business. Many family members became ship captains.
Captain Nichols was also related to the McGilvery family. Their large homes are just across the street. Later, another important person lived here. Carleton Bryant, who was an admiral in the United States Navy during World War II, also called this house home.
