The Capt. Samuel Allison House is a really old and cool house in Dublin, New Hampshire. It sits on New Hampshire Route 101 and looks out over Howe Reservoir. A famous mill owner named Samuel Allison built it around 1825. It's a great example of a building style called Federal architecture. This historic house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
Exploring the Capt. Samuel Allison House
The Captain Samuel Allison House is located on a quiet road in New Hampshire. It's west of Dublin center, on the north side of Route 101. The house is near where Route 101 meets Charcoal Road. From the house, you can see parts of Howe Reservoir. You also get amazing views of Mount Monadnock.
What Does the House Look Like?
The house is a two-and-a-half-story building. It's made of wood and has a roof that slopes down on two sides. There are chimneys on each end of the house. The outside walls are covered with wooden boards called clapboards.
The front of the house has five sections. Windows are placed evenly around the main door. The front door itself is quite special. It has narrow windows on the sides, called sidelight windows. Above the door, there's a semi-oval window called a transom. A porch with a hip roof stretches across the front. Square posts hold up this porch.
Who Was Captain Samuel Allison?
The house was built between 1825 and 1830. Its first owner was Samuel Allison. He was a captain in the local army group, called the militia. Later, he became a town leader, known as a selectman.
In 1830, Samuel Allison started a sawmill nearby. A sawmill is a place where logs are cut into lumber. He sold the sawmill in 1848 when he moved to Marlborough. The front porch was added later in the 1800s.
Other people who owned the house also ran the sawmill. One of them was Micah Howe. The Howe Reservoir, which the house overlooks, is named after him! The Capt. Samuel Allison House looks a lot like another old house, the Rufus Piper Homestead.
