Captain Cove is a small bay, also known as a cove, found on Pitt Island in British Columbia, Canada. This area is part of the traditional lands of the Gitxaala Nation.
The cove is named after Captain Holmes Newcombe, who worked for the Fisheries Department.
About Captain Cove
Captain Cove is about 1 nautical mile (1.9 km; 1.2 mi) (1.85 kilometers or 1.15 miles) long. It is also between 0.125–0.375 nautical miles (0.232–0.695 km; 0.144–0.432 mi) (0.23 to 0.69 kilometers or 0.14 to 0.43 miles) wide.
Inside the cove, you can find several small islands. These islets are located about 0.5 nautical miles (0.93 km; 0.58 mi) (0.93 kilometers or 0.57 miles) east of a spot called Captain Point.
The Rocks Beneath the Cove
Underneath Captain Cove, there's a very large rock formation. It's called the Captain Cove Pluton. This huge rock area is about 100 by 25 kilometres (62 by 16 mi) (62 by 15.5 miles) in size.
Scientists have found that this rock formation is incredibly old. It dates back to a time called the Albian age, which was about 109 million years ago.
Ancient History of the Cove
Captain Cove has a rich history of human activity from long ago. People used this area a lot in prehistoric times.
Along the shores of the cove, you can find large piles of shells. These are called shell middens. They are basically ancient trash heaps left by people who lived there. There are also smaller shell middens near the small creeks that flow into the cove. These middens show us that people lived and ate seafood here for many, many years.
