The Captain David Judson House is a very old and important house in Stratford, Connecticut. It was built by David Judson way back in 1723. This house is special because it was built on the same spot where an even older house stood. That first house was built in 1638 by William Judson, David's great-grandfather!

Nine generations of the Judson family lived in this house. They called it home for a very long time, until 1888.

About the Judson House

The house has a huge stone chimney right in the middle. This chimney was part of the original house from 1638. The new house, built in 1723, shows off the style of Georgian architecture. This was a popular building style in the American colonies during that time.

A Look Inside

Inside the Judson House, you'll find furniture and items from the 1700s. These pieces are all from the Stratford area. One really cool item is a piano that belonged to William Samuel Johnson. He was a very important person who helped write the United States Constitution. He was also the second president of Columbia University. This special piano has even been shown at Mount Vernon, which was George Washington's home!

The house also displays other interesting historical and artistic items for people to see. The front entrance of the Judson House is very fancy and is considered one of the best in Connecticut. A drawing of this entrance was even featured on the cover of a famous book about old Connecticut homes.

A Special Place in History

Because of its history and unique style, the Captain David Judson House was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 20, 1973. This is a list of places in the United States that are important to history. The house is also part of the Stratford Center Historic District, which was added to the list in 1978.

Visiting the House

Today, the Captain David Judson House is open to the public. It works as a historic house museum and a research library. The Stratford Historical Society takes care of the house. You can find it at 967 Academy Hill in Stratford. It's a great place to learn about life in early America!
