A Look Back: The History of Capáez

Capáez has an interesting history, especially when we look at how Puerto Rico became part of the United States.

How Puerto Rico Became a U.S. Territory

After the Spanish–American War, which ended in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This was part of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this treaty, Puerto Rico became an "unincorporated territory" of the U.S. This means it's part of the U.S. but doesn't have all the same rights as a state.

Early Population Count in Capáez

Soon after, in 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a special count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This was like an early census. When they counted the population in Capáez barrio, they found that 1,016 people lived there at that time.
