The Caracas brushfinch (Arremon phaeopleurus) is a small bird that lives in the Venezuelan Coastal Range. It belongs to the Passerellidae family, which includes sparrows and buntings.

This bird prefers to live in the thick bushes and low plants found in humid forests. You can often spot it near the edges of these forests. It lives at heights between 300 to 1,200 metres (980 to 3,940 ft) above sea level.

Why is this bird special?

For a long time, the Caracas brushfinch was thought to be a type of stripe-headed brushfinch (A. torquatus). But scientists discovered some important differences.

They found that the Caracas brushfinch has its own unique song and calls. Its feathers also look a bit different. Most importantly, its DNA (the genetic material that makes every living thing unique) showed it was distinct.

Because of these differences, scientists decided in 2010 that the Caracas brushfinch is its own separate species.
