Carbon is a small village located in central Alberta, Canada. It is part of Kneehill County.

The village is about 41 kilometers (25 miles) west of Drumheller. It is also about 120 kilometers (75 miles) northeast of Calgary. You can find Carbon along Highway 836. It is also close to Highway 21 and Highway 575. Carbon was built in the early 1900s in the Kneehill Creek Valley. It is known for its quiet, tree-lined streets.

Carbon's Early Days

The area around Carbon has a rich and interesting past. Early settlers mainly focused on ranching, farming, and coal mining. The name "Carbon" was suggested by L.D. Elliot, a local rancher. This name was chosen for the new post office that opened in 1904. The village officially became a village in 1912.

A railroad once ran through Carbon. This railroad was on the south side of the Kneehill Creek. Even today, you can still see parts of where the railroad used to fly over the land. The CP Rail company operated this railway. It was mostly used to transport coal from the mines in the area.

In 2021, a count of the population was done by Statistics Canada. This count showed that the Village of Carbon had 492 people living there. These people lived in 222 homes. This number was a little bit higher than its population of 454 people in 2016.

The village covers a land area of 1.99 square kilometers (0.77 square miles). This means that in 2021, there were about 246.8 people living in each square kilometer.
