Carbonero el Mayor is a town in the province of Segovia, which is part of the Castile and León region in Spain. In 2018, about 2,529 people lived there.
What's in a Name?
The name "Carbonero" comes from the Spanish word for "charcoal." A long time ago, this area had many oak forests. People used these forests to make charcoal by burning wood in a special way. The word "Mayor" was added to the name. This helped people tell it apart from other nearby villages, like Carbonero de Ahusín.
A Look Back in Time
Not much has been found from the Iron Age around Carbonero el Mayor. However, the town is in an area where the Celtiberians, an ancient group, had a lot of influence. Evidence of the Roman Empire has been found in Carbonero el Mayor. This includes Roman currency (old coins) and possibly parts of a Roman road. This road might have connected Segovia with Coca, Segovia.
