What's in a Name?
The name "Carbonero" comes from the Spanish word for "charcoal." A long time ago, this area had many oak forests. People used these forests to make charcoal by burning wood in a special way. The word "Mayor" was added to the name. This helped people tell it apart from other nearby villages, like Carbonero de Ahusín.

Not much has been found from the Iron Age around Carbonero el Mayor. However, the town is in an area where the Celtiberians, an ancient group, had a lot of influence.
