The Cardener river flows through a large area of land, collecting water from about 1,500 square kilometers (579 square miles). As it travels, it passes through the Sant Ponç reservoir. A reservoir is like a big lake made by people to store water. This one holds about 25 cubic hectometers of water.

The river then flows past several towns. These include Olius and Clariana de Cardener (both in Solsonès). It also goes through Cardona, Súria, and Manresa (all in Bages). Finally, the Cardener river joins another bigger river called the Llobregat. It meets the Llobregat from the left side at Castellgalí in Bages.

Where Does the Cardener River Start?

The Cardener river begins its journey in the beautiful region of Catalonia, Spain. Its source is found in a spot known as Les Fonts del Cardener. This area is located within the municipality of La Coma i la Pedra. It's part of the wider Solsonès region.

High Up in the Mountains

The very beginning of the river is quite high up. It starts at an elevation of 1,050 meters (about 3,445 feet) above sea level. Imagine standing on a tall mountain; that's roughly how high the river's starting point is! This high elevation helps the water flow downhill with energy.

What Towns Does the Cardener River Pass Through?

As the Cardener river flows from its source, it travels through several important towns and areas. These places rely on the river for water and sometimes for fun activities.

Journey Through Solsonès

After starting in La Coma i la Pedra, the river moves through the Solsonès region. Here, it passes between the towns of Olius and Clariana de Cardener. This part of its journey is important for the local communities.

Flowing into Bages

Further downstream, the Cardener river enters the Bages region. In this area, it flows past some well-known towns. These include Cardona, famous for its salt mountain, and Súria. The river then reaches the larger city of Manresa.

Where Does the Cardener River End?

The Cardener river doesn't just disappear. It joins a larger river, becoming part of a bigger water system.

Joining the Llobregat River

The Cardener river eventually meets the Llobregat river. This meeting point is at a town called Castellgalí, which is also in the Bages region. When two rivers join, the smaller one usually flows into the larger one. The Cardener joins the Llobregat from its left side. This means if you were looking downstream on the Llobregat, the Cardener would come in from your left.
