The Cardiff International Sports Campus (also known as Welsh: Campws Chwaraeon Rhyngwladol Caerdydd) is a big sports area in Canton, Cardiff, Wales. It has an athletics stadium and many playing fields.

This campus first opened in 2009. It was built as part of a larger project called the Leckwith Development. This project also included the Cardiff City Stadium, which is used for football and rugby, and a shopping area.

In July 2015, the local government, Cardiff Council, leased the stadium and its grounds. They gave the lease to Cardiff and Vale College. The college then rented out the sports parts to Cardiff City House of Sport. This agreement lasts for 30 years. Because of this, the stadium is not open to the public during the day anymore. However, you can still visit in the evenings.

Building the Campus

The main stadium building and its bright floodlights for the running track were supposed to be finished by May 2008. But the completion date was moved back to early September 2008.

This new stadium took the place of an older one called the Cardiff Athletics Stadium. The old stadium was taken down as part of the big Leckwith development. This made space for the new Cardiff City Stadium and other facilities.

The whole project cost about £5.7 million. It took 46 weeks, which is almost a year, to build everything.

Grand Opening Day

The Cardiff International Sports Campus officially opened its doors on January 19, 2009. A famous Welsh athletics star, Colin Jackson, was there for the special event.

What's Inside: Facilities

The stadium can hold many people. There are 2,553 seats, and another 2,400 people can stand. This means a total of 4,953 people can be there at once.

Inside the campus, you will find a gym where people can work out. There are also AstroTurf pitches, which are artificial grass fields, for different sports. The campus has meeting rooms and offices too.

It is also the main home for Welsh Athletics. This is the group that manages the sport of athletics in Wales. The Cardiff Amateur Athletic Club also has its headquarters here.

Campus History

In 2015, Cardiff Council agreed to a plan from Cardiff and Vale College and the Cardiff City House of Sport. This plan allowed them to lease the Cardiff International Sports Campus.

The campus has been used for many football games. For example, teams like Barry Town United and Cardiff Metropolitan University played their home matches here. This included games for the 2019–20 UEFA Europa League qualifying competition.
