What Does the Nsoung Long-Fingered Frog Look Like?
Size and Special Features
Male Nsoung long-fingered frogs are about 24–31 mm (0.9–1.2 in) long. Female frogs are a bit bigger, measuring about 30–41 mm (1.2–1.6 in). This measurement is from their snout (nose) to their vent (bottom).
Male frogs have some unique features. They have very long third fingers. They also have small spines on their fingers and near their legs. Female frogs do not have these special features.
Frog Markings
These frogs have patterns on their backs that are common for Cardioglossa frogs. However, they do not have a white line under their eardrum (tympanum).
Where Does the Nsoung Long-Fingered Frog Live?
Frog Habitat
The Nsoung long-fingered frog lives in dense secondary bush and mountain forests. These areas are high up, between 1,750–2,000 m (5,740–6,560 ft) above sea level. They have not been found in untouched (primary) forests. This is because there are no primary forests left in their known habitat.
These frogs are often found near small streams. They like to hide under large rocks and small stones. Scientists believe they lay their eggs and raise their young in these streams.
Protecting the Nsoung Long-Fingered Frog
The Nsoung long-fingered frog lives in an area that has been studied a lot. We don't have exact numbers on how many there are. But scientists think their population is shrinking.
The biggest threat to these frogs is habitat loss. This means their homes are disappearing. People are clearing land for farms, including growing crops like palm oil. More people are also building homes. Trees are also cut down for firewood and building materials.
This frog is not found in any protected area. A protected area is a special place where animals and plants are safe. There might be suitable places for them in the Rumpi Hills. This area is close to Mount Manengouba. However, the Rumpi Hills have not been explored much recently. So, we don't know if the Nsoung long-fingered frog lives there.
