Carico, Missouri facts for kids
Carico is a small, undeveloped area in Stone County, Missouri, in the U.S. state of Missouri. It's known as an "unincorporated community," which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.
Carico is located where Railey Creek and Carico Hollow meet. It's about 3.5 miles east of Galena, Missouri and 6.5 miles northwest of Reeds Spring, Missouri. The old Missouri Pacific Railroad tracks run right through it.
A Look Back at Carico's History
Around 1912, a store was built in the valley near the railroad tracks. People called this new spot "Little Chicago." The area was good for growing tomatoes, so a factory was built right next to the railroad to can them.
A post office opened in Carico in 1921, making it easier for people to send and receive mail. However, it only stayed open for a few years, closing in 1928. Carico also used to have a schoolhouse for local children and a grist mill, which was a place where farmers could grind their grain into flour. The exact reason why this place was named Carico isn't clear today.
