Carl Philip Robinson (born October 13, 1976) is a former Welsh professional footballer. He played as a central midfielder for many clubs. After his playing career, he became a coach. Currently, he is an assistant coach at Atlanta United FC.

Early Life and School

Carl Robinson was born and grew up in Llandrindod Wells, Wales. He went to Oxford Road Primary School. Later, he attended Llandrindod High School.

Carl Robinson had a long career playing football for various teams. He was known for his skills as a midfielder.

Starting at Wolverhampton Wanderers

Robinson began his football journey as a young player at Wolverhampton Wanderers. He joined their main team for the 1995–96 season.

Loan to Shrewsbury Town

To get more experience, Robinson was loaned to Shrewsbury Town in March 1996. He played his first professional game there against Hull City. He also played in a cup final at Wembley Stadium.

Back with Wolves

After his loan, Robinson returned to Wolves. He became a regular player for the team over the next six seasons. During this time, Wolves often tried to get promoted to the Premier League. He left Wolves in June 2002.

Moving to Portsmouth

In July 2002, Robinson joined Portsmouth. He played 15 league games for them. He also had loan spells at Sheffield Wednesday and Walsall. The next season, he was loaned to Rotherham, Sheffield United, and Sunderland. He even played one Premier League game for Portsmouth against Chelsea.

Success at Sunderland

Robinson impressed during his loan at Sunderland. He signed a three-year deal with them in June 2004. He helped Sunderland win the Championship and get promoted. He played in 42 of 46 matches that season.

Time at Norwich City

After a loan period, Robinson permanently joined Norwich City in January 2006. He scored his first goal for Norwich in a big 5–1 win against Barnsley.

Playing in North America

Joining Toronto FC

In January 2007, Robinson moved to Toronto FC in Canada. He scored his first goal for them in a 4–0 win against FC Dallas. He was voted the team's Most Valuable Player (MVP) in his first two years.

With New York Red Bulls

In March 2010, he was traded to the New York Red Bulls. He played in the first match at the new Red Bull Arena. In August 2010, he scored against his old club, Toronto FC, but chose not to celebrate. While at New York, he also started working as a player-coach.

Playing for Wales

Carl Robinson was a Wales international player. He made his first appearance for Wales in 1999 against Belarus. He played his 50th game for Wales in a World Cup Qualifier win. In April 2009, Robinson announced his retirement from international football. He had played 52 games for his country.

Coaching Career

After retiring as a player, Carl Robinson moved into coaching.

Coaching Vancouver Whitecaps FC

In January 2012, Robinson became an assistant coach for Vancouver Whitecaps FC. He then became the head coach in December 2013. He coached the team for almost five years, leading them in nearly 200 games. He left the club in September 2018.

Managing Newcastle Jets

In February 2020, Robinson signed a contract to be the head coach of Newcastle Jets, an Australian club. He left the Jets in October 2020.

Leading Western Sydney Wanderers

On October 15, 2020, Western Sydney Wanderers announced that Robinson would be their new coach. He coached the team until January 2022.

Coaching at Birmingham City

In October 2023, Robinson joined Birmingham City as a first-team coach. He worked alongside Wayne Rooney there. After a short period, both Rooney and Robinson left the club in January 2024.
