Early Life and Family
Carles Antoni Cosme Damià Casagemas i Coll was born on September 28, 1880. His family lived in Barcelona, Spain. They were a well-known and educated family.
Carles's father, Manuel Casagemas i Llabrós, was a very smart man. He had a huge library and could speak seven languages. He worked as a general secretary for a shipping company. He also served as a Vice-Consul for Sweden, Norway, and the United States in Barcelona.
Carles had a sister named Lluïsa Casagemas. She became a famous composer. Her opera, Schiava et Regina, was a big event. The family owned several homes, including vacation houses. Carles and Picasso spent time together at these houses.
As a teenager, Carles and his friends formed a group called the "Barcelona-Bohemian Group." They often met at Els Quatre Gats. This was a popular place for artists and writers in Barcelona. Carles also had strong political ideas. He believed in Catalan nationalism, which meant he supported the idea of Catalonia being its own nation.
Friendship with Picasso
Carles Casagemas met Pablo Picasso in 1899. They quickly became very good friends. They traveled around Spain together. In early 1900, they shared an art studio in Barcelona. Picasso painted many portraits of Casagemas during this time.
In February 1900, Picasso had his first art show. It was at Els Quatre Gats. One of his paintings, called Last Moments, was chosen for a big art show in Paris. Picasso later painted over Last Moments to create a new work called La Vie.
Casagemas also had his own art show at Els Quatre Gats. This was in March and April of 1900. His art show got different kinds of reviews.
Time in Paris (1900–1901)
In October 1900, Casagemas went with Picasso to Paris. They went for the big art show. Later, they moved into an empty art studio in Montmartre, a famous art area.
They met some models and friends there. One of them was Germaine Gargallo. Casagemas quickly fell in love with Germaine. However, he struggled to start a relationship with her. This made him feel very sad.
Picasso suggested they go back to Spain for the holidays. They spent Christmas 1900 in Barcelona. Then they went to Malaga, Picasso's hometown. Casagemas's behavior caused some problems for Picasso there. So, Picasso sent him back to Barcelona by boat.
After a short stop in Barcelona, Casagemas returned to Paris alone. He wanted to see Germaine again. He had been writing to her often while he was away. Not much is known about his last weeks in Paris. He returned to Paris to see Germaine, but things did not work out.
Art Exhibit
In 2014, a special art show was held. It was at the National Art Museum of Catalonia. This exhibit was the first big show just for Casagemas's artwork. It helped people learn more about his paintings.
