Carlos Arroyo Zapatero is a super creative architect, urbanist (someone who plans cities), and critic from Madrid, Spain. He believes that buildings should be designed for people to live in and enjoy over time, not just to look good in photos.

Carlos Arroyo uses a special drawing style for his plans that has inspired many other architects. His finished buildings are often shown in cool ways by artists, like through photo stories or videos. His work has been displayed in famous places like the Venice Biennale (a big art and architecture show) and featured in important magazines.

About Carlos Arroyo

Carlos Arroyo was born on June 14, 1964. After studying languages in London, he returned to Madrid. There, he studied architecture at ETSAM. He even won an award for his best final project in 1997! He later earned a PhD in Architecture in 2018.

From 2000 to 2008, Carlos taught architecture at Universidad de Alcalá. Since 2005, he has been teaching at Universidad Europea de Madrid. He also helps guide important architecture competitions in Europe.

Awards and Recognition

Carlos Arroyo has won many awards for his amazing work. Here are some of them:

  • Gold Prijs Bouwmeester 2013 for OostCampus in Oostkamp, Belgium. This was given by the Government of Flanders.
  • Named one of Archdaily's 65 Best New Buildings in the World in 2012 for Academie MWD.

  • Holcim Silver Award for Sustainable Construction in Europe in 2011. This award is for buildings that are good for the environment.

  • 1st prize in an international competition for OostCampus, a City Hall and Civic Centre in Belgium (2008).
  • 1st prize in an international competition for Academie MDW Academy of Performing Arts in Belgium (2007).
  • International Award for Sustainability and Innovation in Housing in Madrid (2006).
  • 1st prize in an international competition for EUROPAN VI in Toledo, Spain (2001).
  • 1st prize for a penthouse apartment for a collector in Madrid (2001).
  • 1st prize for the "Franchipolis" Pavilion for Deutsche Bank in Valencia (2000).
  • 1st prize for the Water Museum of Tenerife (1999).
  • Isover Award for the best final project at ETSAM (1997).
