Carlos Fernández Gondín (born July 1, 1938 – died January 7, 2017) was an important Cuban politician. He was one of the first members of the Communist Party of Cuba. He also served as Cuba's Minister of the Interior from 2015 until he passed away.

Carlos Fernández Gondín's Life and Work
Carlos Fernández Gondín was born in Santiago de Cuba. His family was a working class family. In 1958, he joined the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces. This group was led by Raúl Castro.
Fighting for Cuba
Fernández Gondín fought against Fulgencio Batista. Batista was the leader of Cuba before the revolution. He also fought against the United States in the Bay of Pigs Invasion. This was a big event in Cuban history.
Joining the Communist Party
In 1965, he became a founding member of the Communist Party of Cuba. This was a very important step in his career.
Helping Angola Gain Freedom
In 1975, Fernández Gondín helped Angola become independent from Portugal. He was one of the first Cubans to visit Angola. He was also a top leader for the military mission there.
Becoming a High-Ranking Officer
Fernández Gondín became a Major general in the Cuban Army. He was also the chief of counterintelligence. This means he worked to protect Cuba from spies.
Serving in Government
From 1989, Fernández Gondín was the First Deputy Minister. In 1993, he became a representative in the National Assembly of People's Power. This is like Cuba's parliament. He held this job until he died.
From 2015 until his death, he was Cuba's Minister of the Interior. This role is in charge of national security and police. He took over from Abelardo Colomé Ibarra. Before this, Fernández Gondín was the Deputy Interior Minister.
In 2015, Fernández Gondín met with Alejandro Mayorkas. Mayorkas was a top official from the United States.
Awards and Honors
Fernández Gondín received important awards. He was called "Hero of the Cuban Republic." He also received the Máximo Gómez Order. These awards show his dedication to Cuba.
Later Life and Passing
In 2015, it was reported that Fernández Gondín had some health problems. In 2016, he could not attend a celebration for the Cuban Interior Ministry. This was due to his health.
Carlos Fernández Gondín passed away on January 7, 2017. He died from health issues he had for a long time. After his death, Julio César Gandarilla Bermejo became the new Minister of the Interior.
